How to keep your curly unit bouncy for longer

Few things feel as good as a fresh curly unit on day one. Full, defined, bouncing with every turn of your head. Then a week or two passes, the curls loosen, the ends start to look tired, and the bounce you fell in love with is gone. The good news is that a curly unit does not have to lose its life so quickly. With the right care it stays full and defined for a long time. Here is exactly how to keep yours looking new.

Wash less, but wash properly

The fastest way to ruin curls is washing too often or too roughly. Curly hair, even on a wig, thrives on moisture and gentleness. Aim to wash your unit only when there is real product buildup, usually every two to four weeks of regular wear. When you do wash, use cool to lukewarm water, never hot, since heat relaxes the curl pattern. Work a sulphate free shampoo gently through the hair without scrubbing or twisting, then follow with a rich conditioner from mid length to ends.

Detangle with patience, never force

Always detangle when the hair is wet and slippery with conditioner, working from the ends upward to the roots. Use a wide tooth comb or simply your fingers. Forcing a comb from the top down is how curls get stretched out and shed early. Slow and gentle keeps the pattern intact.

Lock in moisture after every wash

Dryness is the enemy of bounce. Once washed, while the hair is still damp, apply a leave in conditioner and a light curl cream, scrunching upward to encourage the curls to spring back. A few drops of a lightweight oil on the ends seals everything in. Let it air dry rather than rubbing it with a towel, which only causes frizz.

Refresh between washes

You do not need a full wash to revive your curls. Keep a small spray bottle with water mixed with a little leave in conditioner. A light mist and a gentle scrunch in the morning wakes the curls right back up. This single habit is what keeps a unit looking fresh day after day.

Protect it at night

How you sleep matters. Loosely pineapple the hair at the top of your head if the unit is on, or store it properly on a wig stand if it is off. Always rest on a satin or silk surface. Cotton draws out moisture and roughs up the cuticle, which is exactly what leads to frizz and flat curls.

Store it the right way

When you are not wearing it, never toss your unit into a drawer in a ball. Keep it on a wig stand or folded gently in a satin bag so the curls keep their shape and the lace stays flat.

Treat your curly unit with this kind of care and it will reward you with months of full, defined, bouncy hair. Quality hair is an investment, and a little routine protects it.
